What the six-month rule is
Many countries require a visitor's passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond the day of entry. The reasoning is that if anything delays the return, the document is still valid while the traveller is on their territory.
The practical consequence catches people out: a passport expiring in three months is perfectly valid today and can still stop you boarding. The airline usually applies the rule at the desk, because the airline is the one that pays for the return flight if the destination refuses entry.
Not every destination asks for six months. Some ask for three, and some only ask that the passport cover the stay. That is why the calculator lets you change the months required — six is only the default, not an official answer for your destination.
This tool does the date arithmetic, not the immigration ruling. Always check the requirements published by the consulate of the country you are travelling to before you buy the ticket.
Are the six months counted from departure or from return?
From the date of entry into the destination country, which is the date this calculator asks for. Some countries count from the intended date of departure instead; if your stay is long, use whichever of the two is stricter.
What if my passport expires exactly six months out?
The rule is satisfied: it asks for validity through six months after entry, and a passport expiring on that very day covers it. If you are that close, renewing still saves an argument at the desk.
Does every country apply the six-month rule?
No. It is the most common requirement, but some destinations ask for three months and others only that the passport covers the stay. Change the months required in the calculator to whatever your destination's consulate publishes.
